Career coaching as a paid profession is relatively new. It has grown because experienced professionals who used to be able to mentor younger colleagues are now often struggling just to hold their own.
In addition, when technology can make whole industries obsolete overnight, even the most talented worker may have to find a new career as well as a new job. Success lies in determining what old skill sets can be applied to other professions and in acquiring the most desirable new ones.
